Chapter 19

Waiting had never been one of Pepper’s strengths. While it was a skill she had developed over the course of her career, she hadn’t come by it naturally. And right now, waiting for the ATF intel to come in was maddening.

Tony Fisk’s task of checking the surrounding towns for more missing girls in their age range had yielded a veritable trove of victims — 37 in all, counting the 14 they were already aware of in the Cleveland area. So for the last three days, Pepper and Fisk had been on a mission to speak with the families of each of the new girls his research had discovered. Yesterday they’d been to the town of Ashtabula and spoken with the families of six missing girls.

“What do you think?” Fisk asked, keeping his eyes focused on the road as he drove.

Pepper glanced over at him before her gaze drifted back to the scenery. They were currently somewhere on the outskirts of Cleveland, heading back to the field office. They’d spent the morning and most of the afternoon in Sandusky. There were ten missing girls there.

“I think we keep hearing a lot of similar stories,” Pepper replied. “Each of these girls seems to have simply vanished off the face of the earth, leaving everything they own behind. They each left for school or to go to a friend’s house and simply never came back.”

“It’s eerie, don’t you think?” Fisk asked. “How there are never any witnesses? No abduction tales of girls being led away and forced into a van or something.”

“And why would there be?” Pepper said. “Whoever’s taking these girls, Fisk, they’re not stupid. They wouldn’t want to do anything to draw attention to their actions. This operation is slick and sophisticated. Efficient.” Pepper’s mind was racing over the possibilities. Her voice was a whisper when she added, “Methodical.”

“Then we have to be just as methodical in our investigation,” Fisk said.

“Yes, we do,” Pepper agreed. “And as soon as we get back to the field office I want to set up an electronic map that pinpoints the exact locations where each of these girls went missing. I’m thinking if we can get a visual we may start to see some patters. Maybe our Evil Breed abductors tend to hit a certain type of area in each city. If we can figure out their methodology maybe we can use it to our advantage.”

“That sounds like a solid plan, Boss,” Fisk said.

Once they got back to the field office they put their plan into action, creating an electronic map of Cleveland and the surrounding towns where they’d found cases of missing girls. They assigned a color to each town, and placed colored pins at all the locations where girls had gone missing. The Cleveland area had 14 red pins. Ashtabula had 6 blue pins. Sandusky had 10 purple pins, while Akron had 7 green ones.

Pepper stood behind Fisk staring at his computer screen at the map he’d just created.

“Agent Crazenski was right after all,” Fisk said.
